What is a Local Positioning System (LPS) ?

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

The LPS or Local Positioning System is a method of “accurately” “locating” “an object” within a “boundary”. The following is what the terms enclosed in quotes mean.

  • Accurately: An accuracy of plus/minus 3 centimeters.
  • Locating: Location of the object in longitude, latitude, altitude.
  • An object: A gadget not less than the size of a matchbox.
  • Boundary: A boundary is a cubical space in the real world with a minimum domain area of as less as 1 cubic meter and as large as 100 cubic Kilometers.(10KM * 10KM * 1KM)( Length * Width * Height)

The Gardner

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

The Gardener is a robot that will cut designer grass in a football field or your backyard automatically and on schedule.

The project is dependent on the LPS project.

How will it work ?

  1. The owner of the gardner will use a handheld device to travel in an open area and define the boundaries of an area.
  2. These coordinates will transfered to a PC and each coordinate will be uniquely labeled(for instance a cooridnate can be labeled as “southwest corner”.
  3. The owner will use a computer to create the following
    1. A design pattern in a PC which could include
      1. Text
      2. Stripes or other regular patterns
      3. Freehand designs
    2. A schedule for the gardener to perform the task
  4. The gardner (its a robot afterall) will be placed within the boundaries of “the garden”.
  5. The gardner will wirelessly receive instructions from the computer and perform the tasks as scheduled.

The gadget

The gadget is perceived to be the following

  • Physical dimensions
